What are probiotics?
First of all, you need to understand what probiotics even are, so let’s talk a bit about bacteria. You probably knew that there are bad bacteria – bugs that can make you quite sick. These “bad bacteria” cause all sorts of infections and may require a prescribed antibiotic from your health care provider.
Well, on the flip side, did you know that there are also good bacteria? These do exactly the opposite and really may help you stay healthy? I know it sounds crazy right?!
Probiotics are those good bacteria. They are similar, or the same as the bacteria you have living naturally in your body. These “good guys” will keep your system in check and working properly. The good bacteria will keep the bad from taking over.
Where do you find probiotics?
Probiotics are typically found in things like yogurt, kombucha, other fermented foods, and of course as oral supplements. The benefits are being more widely recognized and therefore you can find them in any pharmacy or grocery store.
But did you know that you can now also find probiotics in your skin care? Many major brands, especially the clean or more natural beauty brands are now including them right in their skin care products.
Why are probiotics used?
As a pediatrician, I often recommend probiotics to my patients. I most often think about suggesting their use for things like constipation, infant colic, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diarrhea, and after antibiotic use. They also may be beneficial for allergies, eczema, acne, and general immune system health.
We see them as something that balances our system. It’s the “good guys” keeping the “bad guys” in check and under control. If the “bad guys” are left unchecked, they will take over and this may lead to many ill effects. This may include everything from weight gain, an unhealthy immune system, skin & digestive issues, allergies, to chronic disease and many more issues.
Why are probiotics now in skin care?
As probiotics have become more widely used, it was recognized that individuals taking probiotics had a noticeable improvement in their skin. This was amazing! It was being used to help try and improve skin conditions such as acne and eczema.
There are now numerous major skin care brands with products that include probiotics, including EVER.
Why do you want bacteria on your skin?
You already have tons of bacteria on your skin, some say more than a trillion! But why?
Well, what does your skin do? It protects you from your environment!
Your natural skin flora (the bacteria that is lives on your skin) is a part of that protection. Unfortunately, this often gets disrupted by harsh cleansers and things like environmental pollution or stress.
Just another reason you need good skin care products – to protect that ever important “good bacteria” and your skin. After all, it is your skin that protects you – so you need to keep it healthy!
What are the benefits of probiotics in skin care?

Those with sensitive skin, acne, eczema or any kind of inflammation do notice an improvement in their skin with probiotics.
Probiotics have a great calming effect as well as being antimicrobial. The flare-ups that these individuals were used to were noticably decreased.
Protecting your skin against the harsh environment, like free radicals, and providing significant hydration is beneficial to preventing many undesirable skin changes including some of the aging effects we all would like to delay.
