Well, it’s that time of year again – a brand new start!

The time you set your goals and get ready for a fresh start. This is the time that you may be reflecting on what you did last year and begin planning goals for this new year.

Did you accomplish all your set goals last year? Your new beginning is NOW – I don’t care what time of year it is. How can you make this next year even better than the last?

Of course, this applies to any time of year – it sure doesn’t just have to be January for you to set new goals!

How about monthly or quarterly goals? I feel that setting shorter-term goals is actually more likely to be achieved. It is much easier to focus over a shorter time, then reset or stretch your next goal. If you look at a whole year, it sure makes procrastination easier.

Coming off of a stressful holiday season is difficult. Just imagine 4 kids, 6-hour car rides, and a week completely out of routine. That is what I am trying to recover from. You can read more about me here.

We come home with new gifts, laundry, cranky, sleep-deprived, sugar-high kids to a leftover mess from the family celebration we hosted just 2 days before we left.

In all honesty, I do love it. The kids are full of excitement, happy, and we got to spend time with family. They have a break from their schoolwork and routine to become refreshed again. By the end – we are once again craving the routine.

New Years – A Time When You Feel Like Anything Is Possible

Yes, the time of year you think about all the things that you didn’t accomplish this year and what you want to achieve in the next. If you are like me, you always think about all these grand goals like – exercise more, organize my house (& really my whole life), drink more water, spend more time with kids, read & study my Bible more, etc. I could go on, but I bet like me you think: Did you really accomplish all that you hoped? Can you say you accomplished those goals you set at the beginning of the year?

Yes, I know you have so many fond memories of each year. Each year time seems to go by faster – kids, jobs, housework, travel, activities, and the list keeps growing.

How can you set better goals this year? How can you become better at actually achieving those goals?

Here Are My 9 Tips to Successfully Achieve Your Goals

1. Limit Yourself to 3-5 Main Goals

I know you have so many grand ideas and goals. The problem is that too many goals make it hard to really focus on accomplishing any of them. You will just feel scattered and later like a failure when you can only do the most halfway at best.

The solution? Just pick a few that will be the most life-changing for you. These are the few that will make you feel the most accomplished at the end of this year.

2. Make Your Goals Specific

As I mentioned above it is so easy to just list off a bunch of general goals – exercise more, drink more water, read more, get organized; but that doesn’t help! You need to set a more specific goal so you have a good endpoint in mind. Then you can actually say if you were successful or not. If your goal is to work out more – well perhaps you did some, but sometimes not. How do you really gauge if you were successful? There is no real sense of achievement.

Here are some more specific examples:

  • “Exercise at least 3 days per week” or “Lose 20 pounds”
  • “Drink at least 6 glasses of water daily”
  • “Organize one room every season/quarter”
  • “Give myself 15-30 minutes personal time daily”

3. Write Down Your Goals with Vivid Description

Did you know that you are significantly more likely to achieve goals that you write down? There are actually studies that support this idea and the more vivid description you give the better! There is actually some science behind this too. As you just imagine a goal, you are only using a small portion of your brain. Now when you write it down – the process of writing it and reading it, seeing pictures of it, etc engages more of your brain and you start to see yourself accomplishing it. Make it relatable and doable!

4. Break Down Your Goals Into Steps

If you stop at your main big goal but don’t come up with a plan – it is much harder to see success. Take that idea and break it down into steps that are doable. The whole goal may seem daunting, but keep yourself on track by breaking it into steps to gradually get your way to the top!

5. Find Your Why

Why do you want to be successful? Why did you choose that goal in the first place? What difference will it make in your life?

This is your motivation – your reminder of why you want to be successful.

For example, a common goal is weight loss. If you lose that weight what does that mean? Pick what motivates you most: You feel better, you can be more active with your kids, perhaps you can come off of some medication, you can go on a shopping spree, and ultimately you have more confidence!

Grab a picture of that vacation, your family, your dream outfit, your motivation to put with your goals.

6. Display Your Goals

OK, now that you have your goals and your why – display it!! This is something that you should see regularly so you can come to imagine it and be reminded. Maybe this is your bathroom mirror, in your office, in your car, displayed on your phone/computer or refrigerator. Make it a place you will see daily or multiple times per day.

This is your constant motivation. Don’t hide it!

7. Share Your Goals

You now know that writing your goals down makes it significantly more likely to be a success, but the next step to increase your chance of success is to share them! Don’t share them with just anyone, share them with someone who believes in you. This person will be your cheerleader and when you are feeling like you can’t get to the next step, they will remind you that you can.

Perhaps you can do the same for them. By cheering on others and seeing their success, it can be a good motivation for you! Your accountability partner!

8. Reevaluate Your Goals Regularly

If you make your goals and then never re-evaluate throughout the year or just look at them twice – that does not help you. You need to continually revisit your goal and how you are doing on your planned steps. This also means that you may have to adjust along the way – that is ok!

It is very possible and likely, that you will run into some obstacles along the way. Do not be afraid to adjust your plan to deal with them to stay on track!

9. Celebrate Your Accomplishments!

You did it!! Don’t forget to celebrate what you have done. Even if you get partway there – make it a celebration. You will have more confidence to make it to the end.

When it comes to next year – you will be celebrating that much more. Next year you will be able to push those goals even higher.
